Beach Safety

22

Oct

With Spring already here and Summer on the way it's a great time to remind ourselves of the importance of Beach safety.

Our Gold Coast beaches are world-class with kilometer’s of golden sand and fantastic swimming and surfing opportunities. But if your planning on spending some beach time on your next Gold Coast holiday it’s important to be aware of some water safety advice. (beach safety tips provided by the Gold Coast city council website)

NEVER:
NEVER Swim alone or surf at beaches not patrolled by Lifeguards or Lifesavers
NEVER Swim outside the red and yellow flags that mark safe swimming areas
NEVER Swim directly after a meal or under the influence of alcohol
NEVER Swim when the beach is closed. (Observe the sign "Danger- Reserve closed to bathing" and the red flag)
NEVER Swim when there are no safety flags
NEVER Panic if caught in a current or undertow, but raise one arm straight up and float until help arrives
NEVER Struggle if you have a cramp, but raise one arm for help, float and keep the affected part of the body still
NEVER Go out far when a yellow flag is flying- it means the surf is dangerous
NEVER Swim if unsure of safe conditions, but seek advice of the nearest Lifeguard
NEVER Struggle against a rip or current, but swim diagonally across it.

ALWAYS:
ALWAYS Swim between the red & yellow flag on patrolled beaches
ALWAYS Read the Flags and Safety Signs and understand what they mean before entering the water.

And, don’t forget to ‘Slip-Slop-Slap’ and drink plenty of water on those hot summer days!

Enjoy our beautiful beaches!

SUP Gold Coast

02

Oct

Like traditional surfing itself, Stand Up Paddle surfing (otherwise known as 'SUP') has it's origins in the waters of Hawaii. Pioneered way back in the 1940’s when the Hawaiian Beach Boys used to paddle out to the surf-breaks standing up to avoid getting their camera gear wet, when taking photos of tourists. From there SUP matured into it's own style of surfing in the 1960’s, and today SUP has made a strong comeback globally amongst surfers and non-surfers alike.

SUP is popular as it's a sport accessible to all, as improved designs have allowed boards to come down a lot in weight while improving manoeuvrability on waves.

While a big part of the sport is catching waves (often waves that on a regular surfboard or longboard wouldn't be rideable) SUP is also a great experience in flat water as a fun and exciting way to cruise around enjoying the water and natural environment. As you are far higher off the water than a surfboard or surfski, visibility is much greater both above and below the water.

SUP is an excellent crossover sport that not only provides more time on the water but also provides an isometric workout that strengthens core muscle groups, improves balance and generally improves fitness. It is also surprisingly easy with people of all ages taking up the activity.

Nearby Tallebudgera Creek and Currumbin Creek are excellent locations to learn or practise in flat water and beautiful surrounds!
