Famed Kirra Reef Returns

Almost 13 years since it disappeared, the renowned Kirra reef has been resurrected.

Around 100m of coral reef has been exposed off the Kirra coast and while the Kirra groin extension six months ago is playing a role in better surf conditions, controlled sand pumping is believed to be the major reason for Kirra reef's return.

The reef disappeared in about 2001 due to sand pumping filling in Kirra Beach.
Divers noticed the buried reef coming through about a month ago a since then the dive site have become more popular, with 20-50 divers per week wanting to dive there. Ashley Walker, a Kirra Dive Instructor, has said that divers willing to brave the chilly conditions could expect to see plenty of bait fish, turtles and groupers around the reef.

The return of Kirra Reef is also good news for surfers, with deeper conditions generating more powerful waves.
